Title: What pump for Waste Motor oil?
Post by: greasemonkey on April 03, 2013, 04:45:04 PM
What type of pump would be suitable to pump WMO at pressure? Not so concerned about LPM, but needs to pump it at fair pressure through a spray valve, like maybe a 1mm hole. Some sort of pump that will maintain pressure as the flow is adjusted? LPM would not need to be anything over 10, and in practise would probably be pumping a lot less.

how much pressure do you want ?

a tam 105 is good up to about 50psi depending on flow rate

james' squirrels run at 2.8bar iirc (40psi ish) but not sure on the flow rate

is it for a burner, or some sort of filtering/cleaning setup?

just use compressed air to push flow, plumb it in to your sysytem

I want the pump for a burner. I figure it will light and run easyer if the oil is vaporised under pressure. Judging by some previous experiments, a tiny trickle of oil will create huge heat and flame, when mixed with air right, so I only need something to pump a tiny amount, at a good ish pressure.
I could use compressed air, but a feel a pump would be simpler.
I want some way of heating a barrel full of water with WMO, as a thermal store type thing for the central heating. It doesn't want to be too wild, and  can't be bothered fooling about trying to get the airflow spot on with the oil. Just want to stick a fire lighter in and turn it on. Bit of a project over the summer.

I would have thought that a Tam 105 or similar would have a limited life doing that.

Seen one of these before?

Nope. I'm guessing, air up one pipe, oil up the other, or its some kind of venturi style system.

Yes exactly that, used to use them in art classes at school.  I think you can still buy them, but you wouldn't need too much skill to make one.  Might be worth sticking a needle valve on each tube to give some degree of control.

They are really tricky to use ... here's "John" demonstraiting one! ...

It would do the job, but from what I've seen, WMO at sub zero temps ain't going up no venturi...........
Could still used the same system and have it pumped up though.

It's based on the Bernoulli Effect, read about his fluid dynamics stuff, very intersting

I've done a bit of research into WMO burners.

It seems you can persuade a standard gun type burner to run on WMO with a lot of preheating. Something like 60 degrees to pump then 140 degrees before nozzle.

Or use a syphon nozzle - but also needs preheating!

just squirting the oil out of a small nozzle won't work, it needs to vaporise properly to burn

is a turn no good for what you want ? much easier to make and use, and much simpler to run - no nozzles, no pumps, no air compressor, just needs a fan

is it for your house or your garage etc.. ?

if it's for the house, then you're really best off getting a proper oil burner (old one is ok) and then getting a proper wmo burning burner for it, it'll be a few quid but then at least you can have it start/stop as needed and leave it running worry free  :)

The thing I see with WMO is it either needs to swirl in a pot, or hit a plate, to keep burning. The setup on a heating oil burner is designed for something a lot more volatile. The kiln I experimented with just had a gravity feed and air introduced with a fan. I was amazed at how tiny a trickle of oil produced so much heat.

I want something small to fit under a 45 gallon drum. Another problem is that WMO seems to have a minimum quantity to keep burning, which under a drip feed is way to hot. I'm hoping that be putting a tiny amount under pressure, and shooting it out in a fan, that minimum quantity will be reduced to the point where the heat is much less.

What I had in mind was a turk burner looking setup, with the oil jet going into a 4 or 6 inch pipe, maybe 6 inches high, and an air jet going in as well.

I t wants to be something easy to light, that isn't dependant on a flue to burn well. It also wants to be instantly extinguishable, no pool of oil burning.

A turk would be OK, but It's just not neat enough for what I want, to much hassle to light, to dependant on air flow, and not easily extinguishable. Plus I don't seem to be able to make one that works effectivly.

I can see what your saying about it need ing to vaporise to burn though. It needs a certain amont of heat in the flame to get going. Maybe I willl have to re think.

you could make a m67 type immersion heater fairly easily. i was going to do that but then i was offered one for  the right price so i brought one instead. really simple design and if you can weld a transit you wont have any trouble making one. let me know and i will send you the measurements. nothing to critical as far as i can see. i am also thinking of using it for the same purpose as you. heating water to run a central heating system.

Looks as though the guy in the you tube vid is just using the normal pump. Blinking internet, I can only down load half it............
